Local woman getting ordained in Baptist Church

Minister Ivy Williams of the Historic Bethlehem Baptist Church in Hahnville will be officially ordained next month.

Reverand Rodney Johnson Sr. will ordain Williams, who has been practicing ministry and helping the community for decades.

“I’m grateful for my pastor for giving me this opportunity because he realizes that preaching the Gospel has no gender,” Williams said.

Williams has been ministering to prisoners at the Nelson Coleman Correction Center for 25 years. She is also a member of the Alpha Daughters of Zion and graduated from Christian Bible College.

Johnson said she started out in the church choir before receiving her call to ministry.

“She’s a very genuine and honest person,” Johnson said. “She’s very people-oriented…and now she is in the process of getting ordained so she can freely exercise her gift.”

Once ordained, Williams will have all of the abilities within the church as any other pastor, including the ability to perform marriages.
