St. Charles Parish Public Library sponsors year round reading classes for babies and preschoolers every Thursday at the West Regional Library on 105 Lakewood Drive in Luling. “Our lapsit reading sessions are for infants to kids age two and begin at 9:30 a.m.,” Claire Cermak, library supervisor, told the Herald-Guide.
“And our preschoolers story time starts at 10:45 a.m.,” she continued.
Cermak said the infant reading group learns songs and nursery rhymes.
“We give parents handouts to take home so the children can continue to practice the songs and nusery rhymes,” she said.
“The preschoolers get to participate in art projects centered around the story that is being read,” she said.
According to KidsSource Literature for parents, research shows that children learn about reading before they enter school.
In fact, they learn in the best manner – through observation. Young children, for example, see people around them reading newspapers, books, maps and signs.
Parents can do a lot to foster an understanding of print by talking with their preschoolers about signs in their environment and by letting their children know they enjoy reading themselves.
“I see the progression and participation in the groups of children that come to library for story time,” Cermak said.
“They clap, sing, repeat and are engaged in what’s going on and that means they’re enjoying the reading activities.”
