Krewe of Des Allemands: Grand Marshals Louella Deroche and Rita Schaubhut

For the Krewe of Des Allemands, Louella Deroche said serving as parade royalty is a little scary but she is certainly honored for being chosen.

The parade rolls at 1 p.m. Sunday (Feb. 7).

“I’m a little nervous,” Deroche said. “I hope I do everything right even if it’s just to be out there to throw beads and take my picture.”

Deroche, 81, is equally appreciative of the parade, calling it “a nice gathering for different families” and she’s enjoyed it.

She rode in two of the earliest parades held there, serving as a mermaid and then as the Old Woman in the Shoe, so she knows firsthand the fun with this gathering.

“You meet people you haven’t seen in a long time,” she said. “I think it just tells you that everybody likes to get together. They enjoy the parades and it draws people from the surrounding communities.”

A native and resident of Des Allemands, Deroche is a tax preparer, although she has slowed down some in recent years.

As for serving as grand marshal with Rita Schaubhut, Deroche said they went to school together and the parade has reunited them as friends.

Serving as in the position is also a first for Schaubhut, who is also 81 years old, as well as a native and resident of Des Allemands. She used to help with the parade when the American Legion handled it many years ago.

“I feel honored to be a grand marshal of this parade,” she said of family also helping her with preparing for the parade. “I’m going to find my family and friends and toss them something special.”
