J.B. Martin, Harry Hurst bigger, better in 2012

The two new wings at Harry Hurst and J. B. Martin Middle Schools should be complete by fall 2012, according to a new timeline set up by St. Charles Parish Public Schools and accepted during their Jan. 20 meeting.

Assuming that everything goes as planned, construction should begin in November 2010 and the wings should be completed and usable by August 2012.

Jim Melohn, chief financial and administrative officer for the school system, said that he does not foresee  any problems or set backs with the timeline.

“As far as construction, I think they tried to allow plenty of time to compensate for weather and other things. They tried to absolutely make sure they’ll have both of those wings completed for the start of the school year in 2012,” Melohn said.

Murray Architects Inc. will be designing the new wing at Hurst Middle School and HMS Architects, with Glenn Higgins, will design the wing at J. B. Martin.

“The (school board) wants to try to keep the designs consistent on the schools,” Melohn said. “Murray and associates had worked on other projects at Hurst school and Glenn Higgins had worked on projects at J. B. Martin before.”
