Historic krewe rolls through Des Allemands with 10 floats

With more than 50 years of history, the Krewe of Des Allemands parade will roll down its familiar route with 10 floats and around 250 riders.

In keeping with tradition, the parade will roll on Sunday, Feb. 15 at 1 p.m.

The Hahnville High School marching band will play for the crowds during the parade and dance groups will help get attendees into a Mardi Gras mood. There will be around 30 units in the parade.

This year’s king and queen, Tommy and Berdie Mahan, will reign over the krewe. The couple will toss special koozies and cups with their names emblazoned on them.

Grand marshals Linda Brien and Barbara Matherne will lead the festivities.

Other parish royalty will also grace the streets of Des Allemands on Sunday, including festival queens from around the parish.

Full of unique flair and fun, each float in the Des Allemands parade has its own festive name, and families from around the area will line the streets and cook out in front of their homes to greet the paraders.

“Mardi Gras is always fun, and this parade is a time when everyone has a good time and enjoys the festivities that surround it,” Parade spokeswoman Mitzi Tregle said. “Hopefully we will have nice weather and sunshine.”

It’s not too late to add your quirky group to the lineup. Floats can join the krewe for $350 for small floats and $400 for larger ones. Those interested in joining the parade this weekend can send an email to dacarnivalkrewe@yahoo.com.

The parade will begin on Whitley Road, travel up to Highway 90, turn into the town’s business district, head down Dejean Street toward Old Spanish Trail and then back up Lorraine Drive to the highway.
