Herald-Guide hires new reporter, editor

The St. Charles Herald-Guide has hired a new reporter/lifestyles’ editor.

Jacob Bielanski comes to the Herald-Guide from a previous career as a freelance reporter, emphasizing crime for the Times-Picayune.

Bielanski earned his bachelor’s in journalism from the University of Wisconsin – Madison, which he said is best described as “the LSU of a place where people eat cheesecurds and fish on frozen lakes.”

It was in Wisconsin that Bielanski also learned how to brew beer and speak German, two skills which he said have “even less application to community reporting than you would think.”

Prior to journalism, Bielanski previously worked in information technology, a background that has served him well as journalism has increasingly expanded into the online world.

Bielanski is an avid traveler, most recently penning a feature on Costa Rica for “Airways Traveler,” but he’s ready to put down roots in St. Charles Parish. Though a transplant, Bielanski has been traveling to southern Louisiana since 2004, and has had family living in the River Parishes since the 1980s.

“I’m ready to dig my nose into everything St. Charles Parish has to offer,” Bielanski said. “Just be patient with me—I might have to ask two or three times how to spell some of these last names.”
