We’ll all remember where we were the day the deadliest campus massacre in the history of the United States occurred – after all it just happened this past Monday. When I heard that 33 students from Virgina Tech University lost their lives to a gunman who went on a student shooting spree – all I could do was stare at my computer screen and fight back the tears.

The tragedy doesn’t affect me personally, but once upon a time I, too, was a college student who lived in a dormatory.

I remember how terrified I was my first few weeks as a freshman on campus being away from my family in a strange place with faces I didn’t recognize.

College is supposed to be a place of opportunity where a person can thrive and excel – where new chapters of your life begin to be written – not a place where you wake up one morning and see death in every corner.

We all remember the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Centers and we’ve lived to tell about the wrath of Hurricane Katrina.

But the events that took place in Virgina also hit home – they affect all the maothers and fathers who’ve lost a child.

And what scares me the most is the idea that most of us think that things like this can’t happen to us, because they can.

I’m not saying that we should live life in fear, I am just saying that we should live our lives to the fullest and cherish each day that we have on Earth as a gift.
