Get ready to laugh … a lot and hard

With funding from events like Saturday’s Night of Laughter Comedy Show, the Assistance for Single Parents organization has grown its programs and reach. The show will be at 7 p.m. Friday at the Jerusalem Shriners, 1940 Ormond Blvd. in Destrehan. The comedy show will include live adult comedians, a male beauty pageant, dinner, a silent auction, raffles, music, a photo booth and more.

Last year’s comedy show raised about $7,500 that Executive Director Debra Rieder said helped fund its school uniform giveaway. In only its first year, it quickly became the organization’s biggest fundraiser that substantially supports its programs.

“We just want to end generational poverty,” Rieder said. “We want to try to help people become more self-reliant and more viable citizens.”

This year’s programs include the single-parent educational empowerment series that includes dinner and guest speakers on topics pertinent to single parenting.

An event is planned for children in grades 3 to 8, including interactive activities geared toward empowering them with entrepreneurial skills, career guidance, anti-bullying and respecting authority.

“Reboot Your Power” also is returning this year. Rieder said the employment seminar is planned in March and will again feature guest speakers, resume’ writing to find better employment. Parents who participate will get a refurbished home computer while supplies last.

Legal workshops are also planned this year, which will provide access to an attorney to address legal questions free of charge.
