Get back to fitness routine after gluttony of Carnival, Super Bowl

After the Carnival Season and Super Bowl Sunday, it can be hard to get back into a fitness routine.

That’s why many gyms and fitness centers in St. Charles Parish are now offering deals and challenges to draw members in.

“We’ve been partying since Halloween,” said Jane Bicknair, owner/manager of Curves in Destrehan.

Curves, an all-women fitness center, is holding a “No More Parties” challenge. During the challenge, which ends April 15, anyone who loses 5 lbs., 5 inches off of their waist or 3 percent of their body fat will win a gift. The top three losers will also get special gifts, Bicknair said.

Curves also has a state-of-the-art 30-minute complete workout that caters to members’ specific needs while making sure they burn up to 500 calories in a single workout.

“If we eat healthy and we exercise daily, our bodies will feel better,” Bicknair said. “We’ll have more energy, we can sleep sounder at night and we just have overall improved health.”

The Fitness Club in Boutte is also holding a special challenge to bring people in who may be lacking in their New Year’s resolutions.

“The Skinny Jeans Challenge” is for people who are interested in personal training and the goal is to lose two pants sizes in eight weeks.

“We’re trying to focus on getting into your skinny jeans instead of getting on the scale,” said Fitness Club owner Leah Woolf. “Most Louisiana gyms see an increase of new people coming into the gym after Mardi Gras. It goes along with giving up something for Lent and they’re kind of refocusing for spring and summer – especially with all of the partying that everyone’s been doing.”

The Fitness Club offers 50 group exercise classes each week and is centered more on athletic training than going and getting on a machine each time a member comes in. The club is also running a special 30-day membership price of $19 for first-time members so that they can give the club a try with no obligation.

Anytime Fitness in Luling has had a steady influx of memberships, according to manager Brittany Kalbacher.

Membership at Anytime Fitness offers 24-hour gym availability, Les Mills group fitness programs and access to over 1,000 clubs in the U.S. and Canada.

While the beginning of the year draws in the most new customers, Kalbacher said, this is the time of year when people come in who have started to lag in their New Year’s resolutions.
