German Coast Farmer’s Market celebrates fifth anniversary

The German Coast Farmers’ Market celebrated the 5th anniversary of its East Bank location on June 14. Live swamp-pop music by The Sonny Bee Show entertained over 800 patrons as they shopped for and sampled delicious fresh fruits and vegetables, wines and jellies from local vineyards, and enjoyed wood carving demonstrations provided by master craftsmen of the parish.

The farmer’s market also welcomed its newest vendor, Who Dat Seafood, who will be a regular at Wednesday and Saturday markets with a fresh seafood display including shrimp, fish, crawfish and crabs.

This new vendor is a great addition to resident vendors like Daddy’s Cajun Cooking who sell local cooked seafood and Cajun specialties like stuffed crabs, shrimp boulettes, pastalaya and jambalaya.

The farmer’s market board invites all locals and visitors to both the Wednesday, West Bank market on River Road in Luling from 3 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. and the Saturday, East Bank market at Ormond Plantation on River Road in Destrehan from 8 a.m. to noon.

Upcoming market events include a preserve contest and a pumpkin growing contest. Details on how to enter can be picked up at the market on Saturday mornings or Wednesday evenings.

Live music will entertain the patrons at each Saturday’s market through October.

Here are just a few of the great items you can find for sale at the markets: fresh rotisserie smoked meats, fresh and specialty seafood, sausage, Hog’s Head Cheese, Andouille, Italian breads and pastries, pies, plate dinners, wines and jellies, natural soy candles, natural goat’s milk soaps and lotions, gourmet rice, pesto, pepper jellies, barbecue sauces, spring honey, kettle corn and cracklin’, bedding plants and herbs, gift baskets and much more.
