Free, discounted fruits and veggies available to seniors at farmer’s market

Fresh produce and farmer’s market specialties could become easier for low-income seniors to purchase – thanks to the St. Charles Parish Council On Aging and the Louisiana Department of Agriculture. According to COA executive director, Margaret Powe, the council in now accepting applications for coupons for use at the German Coast Farmer’s Markets.

“This is our second year offering the coupons for low income seniors,” said Powe. “And last year’s event was a success.”

Powe says that coupons are reserved for seniors 60 years of age and older, and points out that the number of coupons each senior will receive is based on income.

“Our local farmer’s markets provide residents with an alternative to purchase fresh produce,” she added. “And each application will be processed according to income.”

Applications are available at the COA’s Hahnville office located at 626 Pine St. on April 21 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. or on any business day after 3 p.m.

COA caseworker Pam Zeringue will also have a table set up at the German Coast Farmer’s Market’s Wednesday markets on Highway 90 in Luling on April 22 and 29 between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.

“We encourage all seniors to apply for this program,” said Powe. “It’s a great way to help them enjoy the products the local farmer’s markets have to offer.
