Fishing for Frankie scheduled Aug. 8

The 7th annual Fishing for Frankie bass tournament is scheduled Aug. 8 at Pier 90 in Avondale.

The event was established in memory of Frankie Champagne Jr., a resident of Luling who passed away in 2007 following a battle with lung cancer.

This year’s tournament proceeds will help cover the medical costs for Becky Savage of Luling, who recently overcame a battle with cancer and has been unable to work due to ongoing treatment.

Audrey Raziano, Champagne’s sister, said she was proud that the tournament continues to go strong while representing her brother’s memory.

“When he was battling cancer, he was always amazed at how so many people would come out to help,” Raziano said. “He’d always say, ‘Wow, I can’t believe so many people came out for me.’ And with the proceeds, he never would take it all for himself. He’d say ‘Give some of it to this one or that one’ who needs help. It’s how he was.”

She said the tournament usually draws around 200 people, with 30 to 40 boats setting out for the day’s big catch.

Savage said the help is extremely appreciated after what she called a “whirlwind” of a time since she was diagnosed in December.

“It’s been difficult,” she said. “I’ve really been leaning on my family. My boyfriend has been incredible. But with no financial income whatsoever since this began, it’s been a real struggle to even pay the light bill or pay rent.

“It’s all been so amazing, to see how many people actually care. The people behind Fishing for Frankie have put this together and it’s been unbelievable. People are so incredibly supportive and you realize how great those people are when something like this happens.”

Check-in will be after 4:30 a.m. at Pier 90. Weigh-in will be at noon, also at Pier 90.

Entry forms for the tournament are available at First National Bank USA in Boutte and Norco, Majoria’s in Boutte, Roussel’s Hunting and Fishing in LaPlace, Outdoor Express in Paradis, and Pier 90 in Avondale.

The event will be hosted by Throw Me a Cure Relay Team, South Louisiana Team Trail and the family and friends of Frankie Champagne Jr.
