Finally sunny at Krewe du Market

The German Coast Farmers’ Market held the 4th Annual Kid Krewe du Market on Saturday, Feb. 6.

This year’s parade was at the market’s East Bank site at Ormond Plantation on River Road in Destrehan.

During the parade, children ages 10 and younger rode through the market in decorated wagons and threw Mardi Gras beads.

The parade was first held in 2007 and the turnout was better than expected.

“We had a great response that first year. We had about 15 or 20 wagons because the weather was cold but it was agreeable,” said Ann Montgomery, marketing chairperson for the farmers’ market. “We haven’t been blessed with that sense.”

This is the fourth year the Krewe du Market has marched, but the last two years didn’t quite go as planned.

“The weather was atrocious in the morning and the grounds were sloppy. We really tried to cancel it, but when a couple of people showed up we let them go,” Montgomery said. “I couldn’t tell them to go home.”

Reigning over the parade this year was Bailey King, daughter of Darlene and Brian King in Hahnville.

Bailey was chosen as winner of the first parade in 2007.

“Her mom was so thrilled that we remembered that,” Montgomery said.
