COA announces May event details

The St. Charles Council on Aging has released its May calendar, which includes events open to St. Charles Parish seniors 60 years and older.

This month’s highlighted event includes a Health and Information Fair complete with health screenings, information booths, displays and lunch on May 29 in honor of “Older Americans Month.”

This event will take place at the Hahnville Activity Center located at 626 Pine St. from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Call 985-783-3008 to make reservations.

The complete monthly list of May activities includes:

•Bidding 500 Card Club – This card club meets every Monday at the Hahnville Center with a beginners workshop from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. and avid team play from noon to 3 p.m. Call 985-783-6683 for transportation.

•COA Fun Day – Fun activities the fourth Friday of each month. This month a “Pub Day” will be held on May 22 from noon to 3 p.m. at the Hahnville Activity Center. Event features darts, pool tournament, cards, music, dancing, dice and pub refreshments. Space is limited. Call 985-783-6683 for reservations.

•Scrap Booking and Calligraphy Art with Anne Hymel – This group meets every Thursday from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the New Sarpy Activity Center. Call Lois at 985-764-2412 for more information.

•Travel Club – The club is accepting applications for its May travel club which is a “Mystery Trip” and lunch on May 13. The COA will begin accepting reservations for its June 10 trip to the National World War II Museum. Call 985-783-6683 for reservations for both trips.

•Exercise Classes – The COA sponsors exercise classes every Tuesday and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. and from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Fitness Club located at 13117 Highway 90 in Boutte. The program centers around Body Flow exercise.

•Literary Circle of Friends – This group meets every Friday from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at 145 Angus Dr. in Luling. Call Sharyn at 985-785-1981 for lunch reservations and transportation.

•Computer Club – This group meets the third Tuesday of each month. Next meeting is set for May 19 from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the St. Charles Parish Hospital Computer Club. Visit them online at www.home.bellsouth.net/p/pwp-computerclub.

•COA Cafe’ – Food, friends and fun the fourth Wednesday of every month. Next meeting is set for May 27 at the Z-Spot Cafe located on Highway 90 in Paradis. Cafe is by reservation only, call 985-783-6683. The group will also begin taking reservations for its June 24 cafe on May 28, scheduled at Grumpy’s 50s Cafe in Paradis.

•Senior Dancers of S.t Charles Expo Group – This group meets every Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Hahnville Center.

•Blood Pressure Checks – The COA will provide seniors with checks on May 13 at the Norco Center at 10:30 a.m. and the New Sarpy Center at noon, and at the Luling Center at noon.

•Defensive Driving Course – The AARP, the COA and the St. Charles TRIAD Program will sponsor a defensive driving course on June 4 at the Hahnville office. To register, call 985-783-6683. All classes are from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The cost is $10 for a 1-day course.

•Older Americans Month Tea Party – Tuesday, May 12 at the Hahnville Center from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m.

•Older Americans Month Coffee Social – Wednesday, May 20 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.

•Older Americans Month Sing-A-Long – Friday, May 15 from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the New Sarpy Center.

•Older Americans Month Show and Tell – Wednesday, May 6 at 10 a.m. at the Norco Center.

•Capital Legal Services – Thursday, May 21 at 11 a.m. A speaker will discuss social security changes.

•Red Hat Society COA Chapter Quarterly Social – May 15 from noon to 2 p.m. at the Wildcat Kitchen located at 1 Wildcat Lane in Destrehan. For more information, call Stephanie at 985-783-6683.
