Recognized for ‘sincere passion’ to help others

Carolyn Smith Boyd was named Citizen of the Year by the Rotary Club of St. Charles Parish for the 2017-18.

Boyd was honored at the annual Citizen of the Year Banquet on Tuesday, March 27, 2018, held at the Satellite Center in Luling. She is a native of St. Charles Parish and a graduate of St. Charles Parish Public Schools. She is the daughter of the late R. K. and Helen Smith.  Her first job was working as a Medical Technologists at St. Charles Hospital in Luling.

Boyd was the first African American Health Professional employed at St. Charles Hospital.   After retirement, Carolyn served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Hospital.

Boyd serves as Coordinator of the Peace and Justice Ministry at St Charles Borromeo Church in Destrehan.  She was instrumental in implementing a ministry that provides Financial Empowerment, Mental Health Counseling, Anger Management, Bible Study, Yoga and exercise to women inmates at Nelson Coleman Correctional Center.

Boyd also worked with the St. Charles Parish Community Service Housing Rehab Program Specialist to establish a Labor of Love Ministry that assists low-income individuals with home repairs.

The program targets the elderly and disabled.  Carolyn is an active member of the St. Charles Women’s Club and works with community outreach. She serves on numerous boards; whose mission is to improve the quality of life of citizens in St. Charles Parish.
