So far, there are 136 teams ready to compete for the titles of Best Jambalaya, Best Pastalaya and Best Gumbo at the Oct. 3 Battle for the Paddle event in Luling.
The event, which is put on by the United Way of St. Charles, will be held at the Edward A. Dufresne Community Center from 3 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Last year’s event was capped at 200 teams, but changes to the layout of the event could mean that more than 200 teams compete this year.
Team registration is $175 and includes four entry bracelets. After the Sept. 20 deadline, registration will increase to $200 per team. Teams can purchase extra entry bracelets for $10.
Tamara Plattsmier of the United Way of St. Charles said she tells teams to prepare for the event like it the biggest tailgate they’ve ever been to.
“Think of an LSU tailgate, where you’re providing the food,” she said. “You’ll need things like tables, chairs, tents, drinks, and all the supplies to make the day comfortable and enjoyable.”
Organizers of the event expect about 4,000 to 4,500 attendees, including team members, volunteers and the public. Live music will begin at 5:30 p.m.
“It’s successful because it’s the biggest party in St. Charles Parish,” Plattsmier said. “People come for the incredible food, great music and to support a cause that matters in the community. It’s a fun, feel-good event that brings everyone together.”
She said she is most excited for announcing the winners.
“My favorite part is always the same – announcing the winners,” she said. “Seeing their pure joy and excitement when they win the naming rights for the best dish makes all the hard work worthwhile. This year, I’m also looking forward to the new parking area we’re opening down Judge Edward Dufresne Lane, which should make access to the event easier.”
First place teams in each category will take home the prize paddle for one year and will receive free entry into next year’s event. First, second and third place teams for each category in the Judge’s Division and People’s Choice Division will win a prize paddle.
