Are you doing all you can to live a healthy lifestyle?

Most people think they are in good health, but the truth is we can all do things to improve. Even small lifestyle changes can make a big difference. A healthy routine should include regular exercise, a healthy diet, stress management and having recommended tests and screenings.

Exercise is an important part of a healthy lifestyle. It can boost your immune system, combat depression, improve sleep and more.

A complete fitness program should include a variety of exercises such as aerobic activity, a flexibility program, and strength training. Remember to get creative with your exercise routine and have fun with getting fit.

In our world of fast food, curbside dinning and eating on the run, people often find it hard to maintain a healthy diet. One easy step you can take is to practice portion control when eating out. Order smaller sizes, split an entrée with a friend or take part of your meal home.

It is also important to remember that you are never too busy to eat healthy. A healthy diet should include a balanced mix of grains, vegetables, fruits, milk, meat and beans (proteins), and oils. Vegetarian and other alternative diets can be good choices for some people. Be sure to check with your doctor before starting an alternative eating program.

In today’s society, stress is a growing concern. Managing stress is important to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. When feeling overwhelmed, say no to activities and tasks that are not truly necessary.

Taking a break from your worries to do something you enjoy can be helpful. Other good ways to unwind are through meditation and visualization. Set aside 10 to 20 minutes each day for quiet reflection or visualize yourself in a soothing environment.

Regular screenings, tests and exams are vital to good health. When problems are detected early, the chances for cure are better.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, some important health screenings that everyone should have include routine physicals, cholesterol screenings, blood pressure screenings, skin self-exams and diabetes tests.

Important screenings for men include colorectal cancer screenings, prostate cancer screenings and testicular self-exams.

Important screenings for women include breast self-exams, clinical breast exams, mammograms, Pap smears and bone density screenings. Consult your physician to determine when you need to have these and other screenings.
