Allemands Elementary play area re-opened, still incomplete

Students at Allemands Elementary School will finally be able to enjoy their play area again after months of construction on a cover for it.

The School Board voted to approve the area as substantially complete so that the kids could use it, even though there is still some work to be completed on the covering.

The St. Charles Parish School Board’s long range plan for physical education and athletic facilities includes providing covered play areas at elementary schools.

Allemands, Luling, Mimosa Park, R.J. Vial, Ethel Schoeffner, New Sarpy and Norco Elementary Schools will all have covered play areas when the project is completed.

Five play areas are still in the process of being completed.
Rochelle Cancienne-Touchard, director of public information for the school system, said that the play area will not be dangerous even though there are still parts of the project that need to be completed.

“It’s ready for its intended use. The only things left are small punch-list items, like fence work, bench repair and grading the ground to make sure the dirt’s even,” Cancienne-Touchard said. “It’s completely safe for kids. There is no risk.”

Cancienne-Touchard said the work will be finished soon and that approving something like this as substantially complete is not uncommon.

“This is done all the time in completing projects,” she said. “(The workers) will work around the school in their schedule to make sure the work does not interfere in classroom instruction at all.”
