AFSP providing school uniforms to those in need

Assistance For Single Parents (AFSP) is conducting a uniform drive for its “Help A Child … Assist A Single Parent Back to School Uniform Giveaway.”

Green boxes for donations have been placed throughout the community in East and West bank regional libraries, Winn Dixie in Destrehan and Luling, Majoria’s Supermarket, Gre’auds in Norco and other locations, said Executive Director Debra Rieder.

AFSP recently received a $5,000 donation from Archer Daniels Midland Co., which it is using to buy new uniforms and coordinate the uniform drive, which will also include collection of belts, shoes and backpacks.

Items collected will also be issued to parents of those same children on a first come, first served basis on July 11 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at St. Charles United Methodist Church in Destrehan.

A nonprofit organization, AFSP focuses on the overall health and well being of children, while its programs are geared toward assisting and empowering working single parents with support, services, and fellowship by offering a “hand up” rather than a “hand out.”  Rieder explained.
