12 parish kids graduate from gardener program

This week’s VIPs, Very Important Parishioners are none other than homegrown 4-Hers who recently completed the LSU AgCenter’s Master Gardener Program.

St. Charles Parish County Agent,  Rene’ Schmit of the LSU AgCenter, presented certificate awards to 12 graduates in recognition of their completing 52 hours of course work toward certification as a Louisiana Master Gardener.

Achieving certification involved participants attending and completing a total of thirteen, four-hour sessions of specialized instruction.

The course work involved participants receiving instruction on 19 horticulture subject matter areas that included Botany, Soils & Fertility, Annuals & Perennials, Woody Ornamentals, Citrus, Lawn Management, Vegetable Gardening, Composting, Plant Diseases, Roses, Plant Propagation, Butterfly Gardening, Insects, Pesticide Safety, Horticulture Laws & Regulations, Tree Care, Landscape Bed Preparation and Pruning.

Instructional training was provided by PHD horticulture specialists, County Agents and certified Louisiana Master Gardeners of the LSU AgCenter with training sessions conducted at the St. Charles Parish County Agents Extension Office in Luling, Louisiana.

In addition to the specialized training, graduates will donate 40 hours of volunteer service in assisting horticulture educational efforts of the LSU AgCenter.
The volunteer aspect of the Master Gardener Program allows individuals to dedicate their time and talents to citizens of their community by applying the science and art of horticulture.
