Toys, Santa to greet parish children at free community event

Santa Claus and his elves expect about 1,700 St. Charles Parish children to attend the annual Toy and Gift Event Saturday, Dec. 13 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Edward A. Dufresne Community Center in Luling.

All parish children from infants to age 14 are invited to send their letters to Santa and pick out a toy at the event. A parent or guardian must accompany children and provide proof of residency.

Santa Claus, Cinderella, the Grinch, Belle, Batman and Robin will greet children at the event. Valero will provide Jambalaya while supplies last. Bunge donates bikes for a bike raffle for all kids that attend the event.

At last year’s event, volunteers handed out over 2,700 toys to children. The annual event is coordinated by the Toy and Gift Event Board.  Sponsors of the event include Toys for Tots, Rotary Club of St. Charles, Valero, The Times-Picayune Doll & Toy Fund, United Way of St. Charles and Bunge.

Jeanne Arabie, a Toy and Gift Event board member who has been involved in the event for five years, said the event is a very memorable day for family and children.

“We know families are having a hard time, so we want everyone to come out and enjoy this event with their children,” Arabie said. “The faces not only of the children but the parents that show much excitement for their children always bring smiles to me and the volunteers.”

She said many attendees are thankful.

“It makes me know we are doing something right,” Arabie said. “Yes, it is a free event, but to some of the people it means a priceless gesture of happiness.”

Arabie said she is looking forward to seeing the children so excited to see Santa and the characters.

“Sure, they are happy they get to pick a toy but that is something they have to think about where when it comes to Santa they just run and give hugs,” she said.
