Sheriff’s Office offers free rides during holidays to keep impaired drivers off the road

Holiday partygoers who need a safe ride home can call the Sheriff’s Office for a free ride, said Sgt. Jenni Barrette, a spokesperson for the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Through New Year’s Day, St. Charles Parish residents can call the Sheriff’s Office communications and dispatch center at 985-783-6807 to get a ride home.

“This is all about saving lives,” Barrette said. “There is a spike in DUI’s around the holiday season partly because there are so many events that residents are attending to celebrate Christmas and the New Year.”

Barrette said two residents got safe rides home last year.

“We just want to make sure that if someone finds themselves in the position of having too much to drink that there is an alternative to risking theirs and others’ lives by driving,” she said.

She said the inspiration behind starting the program was to allow residents to attend functions and events during the holiday season and not have to worry about driving home under the influence.

“We take the guessing part out of the equation, it’s a free and safe ride home,” she said.

Rideshares and designated drivers can also get partygoers home safely.
