Parks and recreation department opens summer camp registration

Registration for the parks and recreation department’s summer camps and activities is now open. The department said parents are encouraged to register early to secure a spot for their child.

The department will host a basketball, baseball, softball and volleyball camp taught by high school coaches and teams. Registration for the sports camps ends on May 31.

Basketball camp, a week-long program for boys and girls ages 6 to 16 years old, will consist of three sessions. Coach Erica Randolph and the Hahnville High School boys’ basketball team will teach the fundamentals of basketball at Edward A. Dufresne Community Center. Session 1 will run from June 2-June 5. Session 2 will run from June 9-June 12. Session 3 will run from June 16-June 20. There will be no camp on June 19 because of the Juneteenth holiday.

Baseball camp, for boys ages 7-14 years old, will take place at the West Bank Bridge Park.  Coach Jared Vial and the Hahnville High School baseball team will teach batting skills, pitching skill, fielding skills, base running, conditioning and more. Session 1 will run from June 16-June 20, and session 2 will run from June 23 to June 27.

Softball camp is open to girls ages 7-14 years old. Coach Craig Perrier and the Destrehan Fighting Wildcats softball team will teach batting sills, fielding skills, pitching skills, base running and conditioning at the West Bank Bridge Park. Session 1 will run from June 2-June 6, and session 2 will run from June 9-June 13.

Volleyball camp is open to boys and girls ages 6-16 years old. It will take place at the community center. Destrehan head coach Miranda Kelly will coach session 1, which will run from June 23-June 26, and head coach Mendi LeBoeuf of Hahnville will coach session 2, which will run from July 7-July 10.

The department will also host an agility clinic from young athletes ages 7 to 14 years old, with a session from June 2-June 26 and a session from July 7-July 17. The clinic is held on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Edward A. Dufresne Community Center. Registration ends May 31.

Flag football camp, a three-day camp at West Bank Bridge Park, is for children 5-14 years old. The camp will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Session 1 will run from June 23-June 25, and session 2 will run from July 7-July 9.

The department’s Kidcam Summer camp, a 9-week camp that runs from May 27 through July 25, is open to campers ages 5 to 13 years old. The camp is held at Lakewood Elementary and includes activities that promote fun, fitness, friendship and creativity. Parents can register online at kidcamcamp.com.

And finally, First Tee-Greater New Orleans will host a golfing camp for kids ages 6-12 years old. The camp will teach the fundamentals of golf while helping young people build character and healthy habits. Session 1 will run from June 3-June 9 and session 2 will run from July 8 to July 11.
