The St. Charles Parish Library has introduced a new series of events aimed at capturing the nostalgia of the 80s and 90s for millennials. The next event in the Millennial Mayhem series will allow attendees to gather around a campfire, make s’mores and get immersed in a spooky book from the 90s.
“Millennial Mayhem came out of a desire to offer more programming for millennials—the demographic of people born between 1981 and 1996,” Lauren Campo Pitz, assistant director of the library system, said. “Right now, there is so much nostalgia for the 80s and 90s, and this program gives us the chance to tap into that. It creates an opportunity for socializing and connecting with peers with similar interests and life stages.”
Pitz said that many millennials now have children, careers and busy schedules, and the library system did not previously have events for them to attend as adults.
“Millennial Mayhem is the answer to that time away—just one hour—to have a little fun,” she said.
Millennial Mayhem: A Night at Camp Mayhem, will be the third such event in the series. Previously, the library held a pop culture trivia night in June and a crafting event in July where attendees made sand art and beaded keychains.
“It takes time for the word to get out, but we’re having a lot of fun planning nostalgic programs for millennials,” Pitz said.
Millennial Mayhem: A Night at Camp Mayhem will take place on Monday, Aug. 19 from 6-7 p.m. at the St. Rose branch and those in attendance will enjoy the book “Escape from Camp Run-For-Your-Life,” which is a Goosebumps choose your own adventure book by R.L. Stine.
“The idea for this is that everyone who is there will interact to decide on the outcome of the book, with the group helping to determine the fate of our campfire story,” Pitz said. “This story is perfect for those millennials who grew up with the Goosebumps book series and TV show.”
She added that the laid back event will also include s’mores as the featured activity with the mood being set by a faux fireplace.
“We want Millennial Mayhem to create a space for socializing with other adults sharing similar interests, so there will be time for that too,” Pitz said.
