Krewe of Lul to roll with 28 floats Saturday

On Saturday, Feb. 14., at noon, the Krewe of Lul parade will roll with 28 floats.

The parade will follow its traditional route and will begin at Winnwood Shopping Center on Paul Maillard Road and roll from Hwy. 52 to Hwy. 18, Sugarhouse Road, Angus Drive and back to Hwy. 52. The parade will include Hahnville High School band, cheerleaders, dance teams, ROTC, fire trucks, slingshots, jeeps, horses, ponies, festival queens, and walking dinosaurs.

Quincee Berthelot, a captain of the Krewe of Lul, said she loves seeing the community gather, enjoying the day with family and friends, and seeing the excitement of the krewe’s royalty. Berthelot has a passion for candid photography and captures photographs of Krewe of Lul royalty at each event leading up to the parade day and on parade day. A keepsake book of the photographs is given to royalty as a gift from the captains of Krewe of Lul.

“One of my favorite photography quotes is ‘sometimes you will never know the true value of a moment, until it becomes a memory,’” Berthelot said.

This year’s king and queen are Billy and Sarah Becnel Thigpen. This year’s grand marshal is Suzanne “Sue” Landry Armand. Other captains are Russell and Dianna Lauve, Wanda Candies, Debbie Dufresne Vial, Randy Lauve, Lloyd and Beth Landry, Garrett Lauve, and Carlee Lauve Brignac.

Berthelot said there are no major changes to this year’s parade.

“But we will be gearing up shortly after this parade for next year, celebrating 50 years in 2027,” she said.

Krewe of Lul first rolled in 1978 when St. Charles Parish native Vernon Higgins went to the courthouse and got the permit that started it all. That first year, there were six floats. John and Jennie Buscalacchi were the krewe’s first king and queen.
