A snowman wearing a face mask … it could only make perfect sense – and a perfect Christmas card – in 2020.
The artwork of Casey Smith, a 15-year-old sophomore at Hahnville High School, was recently selected for the St. Charles Parish Public School System’s 2020 Christmas card.
Each year the district’s holds an art contest in which the winning piece is featured on the school system’s official card.
The Des Allemands resident, who has been in talented art classes since fifth grade, said she and her peers started working on the pieces in class in October. She initially had no idea that she’d won this year’s contest.
“I walked in the school building last week and I remember people congratulating me and me being like, ‘Wait … what happened?’” she said laughing. “I was very surprised. I did not expect that at all … I didn’t really think I would win.”
Smith was recognized at the Dec. 16 school board meeting, where she was presented with a framed Christmas card and certificate.
Her winning artwork features a snowman who is wearing a face mask. She said the contest had many parameters, including the guideline that each artist could only use four different colors to create their art.
“I thought about doing a Santa with the mask,” Smith said of her creative process. “I knew I wanted to do something with the mask … it just was fitting.”
