The family of Brandy Harris, who died unexpectedly last April, will host an Easter egg hunt in her honor Sunday, April 20 from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Boutte Park. The event will raise funds for Brandy’s seven children, who range in age from 5 years old to 21 years old.
Darlynn Harris, Brandy’s sister, said Brandy had a warm, sweet heart.
“She was loud, she was full of life,” Darlynn said. “She would walk into a room, and she would talk to you like y’all have known each other forever. She had a giving heart. If she saw somebody needed something, she’d give it to them.”
Brandy, whose nickname was “Messy Bee,” had a unique sense of humor.
“She was always using her own words, using her own dictionary,” Darlynn said. “We’d ask, where did these words come from? They came from her. She’d make you smile and make you laugh – you couldn’t stay mad at her. She’d light up the room.”
Darlynn said Brandy’s children are now with their grandmother. They are missing their mom every day, she said.
“It’s tough on them,” she said. “They’re doing okay, but you miss your parent, you know?”
Chelsea Williams, Brandy’s cousin, said Brandy always talked about doing something for the kids in the community.
“Me and [Darlynn and Diondra Morgan, a cousin] decided we would get together and make her dreams come true,” Williams said.
The egg hunt is free and open to the public. The event will feature music by BJSocole and $5 raffle tickets. There will be free food for kids, including hot dogs, nachos and pizza. The Easter Bunny will make an appearance at the event, as well. Vendors will offer food and treats for purchase.
Darlynn said the community has been supportive.
“We have a lot of volunteers that are willing to come out and help,” she said. “People have donated raffle prizes and money for the gold eggs.”
All donations will go toward Brandy’s children.
“That’s what [the event] is for,” Darlynn said. “So we can let the kids go out and do a vacation or a summer trip or something to ease their mind. It’s been a tough year.”
