Collection for Hurricane Sandy victims

LULING & HAHNVILLE – Arabie Trucking, the St. Charles Parish Retired and Volunteer Program, Heaven on Earth Day Spa and American Legion Post 131 are collecting items for the victims of Hurricane Sandy. Trucks will be leaving Nov. 18 to deliver items for Thanksgiving.

Items needed include coats, blankets, sweaters, baby supplies, canned goods, paper products, cleaning supplies, pet supplies and any other items you think would be needed.
Drop-off locations:

Heaven on Earth Day Spa, 613 Paul Maillard Road in Luling from 8 a.m. until 7 p.m. through Thursday, Nov. 15
RSVP Office 171 Keller Street in Hahnville from 8:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. weekdays until Friday, Nov. 16.

River Parishes Fall Festival

Women’s Ministry of First Baptist painting class

LULING – The Women’s Ministry of First Baptist Church, located at 921 Paul Maillard Road in Luling, is inviting all interested ladies in St. Charles Parish to join them in a special night of food, fellowship and painting on Monday, Nov. 5 from 5:30 – 8:30 p.m.

Marie Keene will once again lead the group in creating a beautiful pre-drawn tree on canvas in painting as she gives a Bible lesson relating to it. No prior painting knowledge is necessary. Attendees are encouraged to bring finger food to share.

Participants can sign-up on the church bulletin board or call the church office and speak to Jill at (985) 758-6297 or leave a message so you can be put on the list so they will know how many canvasses to prepare.

The cost will be under $10 for supplies and lessons payable on the night of the class. […]

Baby-Miss Comet pageant

LAPLACE – The Baby-Miss Comet pageant will be held on Sunday, Nov. 4 at St. Charles Catholic High School in LaPlace.

The entry fee for the pageant for all divisions is $50 including photogenic. Admission into the pageant is $3 for attendees.

The dress code for the pageant is Sunday best for Baby Miss through Jr. Miss and evening gown for Teen and Miss Divisions.

Crowns and monogrammed banners will be awarded to all Queens. Queen, alternates, photogenic, fashion, prettiest hair, prettiest smile and prettiest eyes will be awarded in each group.

All proceeds will benefit SCC Carnival Ball, Karleigh Landry and David Bleakly.

Registration for all categories is between 1:15-2:00 p.m. and the pageant begins at 2:15 p.m. for all 9 divisions. Entry forms can be picked up at St. Charles Catholic or downloaded from the school website.

Listed below are the categories age groups for each category:

– Baby Miss 0-11 months girls
– Tiny Miss 12-23 months girls
– Precious Miss 2-3 year old girls
– Little Miss 4-5 year old girls
– Petite Miss 6-7 year old girls
– Deb Miss 8-9 year old girls
– Jr. Miss 10-12 year old girls

Norco Elementary fall festival

NORCO – Norco Elementary School is hosting a Fall Festival from noon – 2:30 p.m. on Friday. Oct. 26.

The festival will be held at the school located at 102 Fifth St. in Norco.

Admission to the event is free and activities will include games, raffles, a cake walk, food and a DJ.
All faculty, staff, community members and students are invited to celebrate.

LULING – R. K. Smith Middle School is presenting a “Fall into Learning” event on Wednesday, Oct. 24 from 6:30-7:30 p.m.

The program will feature information on math and literacy strategies, LEAP, iLEAP, SRCL Grant and a science and social studies fair.

Door prizes, as well as food and refreshments, will be provided for parents and students.

DES ALLEMANDS – The Des Allemands Volunteer Fire Department is hosting a blood drive and fire prevention open house on Saturday, Oct. 13 from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.

The event will feature a blood mobile, bounce house, tornado trailer, fire pit, finger painting, food, Sparky and more. Music will be provided by DJ Magic.

Everyone is invited to attend.

Sheriff’s Office shooting range open to public

KILLONA – The St. Charles Parish Range will be open to the public for shooting rifles only.
Remaining range dates for 2012 are October 13 and 20. Range hours will be 8 a.m–11 a.m. and noon–4 p.m each day.

The following range rules must be followed by participants:
-Report to the firearms instructor prior to removing any weapons from the vehicles.

-Weapons are to be transported to the range in a suitable transportation device.

-No weapons will be brought to the range in a loaded condition.

-All safety and liability forms must be filled out and signed prior to firing.

-No one under the age of 17 will be allowed to shoot on the range without supervision of a parent or guardian. A parent or guardian must sign the liability form.

-Proper identification is required to present to the firearms instructors.

All participants are required to bring their own targets, safety glasses, hearing protection, ammunition, staples and a staple gun.

Child screening clinic

DESTREHAN – A child screening clinic will be held at New Sarpy Elementary on Saturday, Oct. 13 from 9 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.

The clinic is for parents who have concerns about their children in speech, language, hearing, vision, behavior, physical movement or abnormal development.
Parrents are encouraged to bring children to the free neighborhood screening clinic sponsored by St. Charles Parish Public Schools.
The screening will determine if attending children may need further evaluation.
