New West Bank park unveiled

Walking trail, playground to highlight March 17 meeting

The St. Charles Parish Recreation Department will hold a public meeting to discuss plans for a park slated for the South Lakewood, Willowridge and Willowdale communities.

The meeting will be held on March 17 at 7 p.m. at Lakewood Elementary School. Residents are encouraged to attend.

The Rathborne Park will feature a walking trail, pavilion and some playground equipment.

“We’re working diligently to provide recreation to everyone in the Willowridge, South Lakewood and Willowdale areas,” Duane Foret, director of parks and recreation, said. “And we’re anxiously awaiting some outside funding to enhance the proposed park and playground concept that we have in the early stages of the design.”

Foret says improvements to Killona’s park are in the works too, and KaBOOM, an organization whose volunteers build playgrounds for children within 48 hours, has its eye on Montz.

“We’ve been applying for some funding for the Montz area because the parish owns about 11 acres of land in that area and we feel pretty good about the funding for the park,” Foret said. “A park in the Montz area has been needed for many years because of the increase  in the population.”

Foret says, with some funding from private sources, the area can definitely be enhanced.
