Spin doctors are nuts – crime is a real problem in New Orleans

The crime problem in New Orleans can be rationalized and denied by the public officials in New Orleans, but they are fooling no one, including the people who live in the city.

In the last week more Americans have died in New Orleans than in Iraq. Since Dec. 29, there have been eight military deaths. In the Big Easy, there have been 14 murders.

Similar stories are in the New York Times, Los Angeles Times and the Washington Post and those are the only national newspapers that I had time to look at.

From the Los Angeles Times on Sunday:

J. Stephen Perry, president and chief executive of the New Orleans Metropolitan Convention and Visitors Bureau, said his organization was advising its clients, including convention organizers and tour operators, that the violence was confined to areas where tourists do not typically go.

“It’s not really impacting our visitors,” Perry said. “We have one of the lowest rates of crime on visitors and tourists, compared to other cities.”

It must be little comfort to the citizens of New Orleans to hear Steve Perry’s comments.

Apparently, unlike tourists, citizens are expendable. Perry doesn’t get it. New Orleans is not about tourists, it is about New Orleanians.
