Prescott Canal work to improve Montz drainage

By Renee Simpson

Public Works is now completing a project to refurbish and clean the Prescott Canal in Montz.

For three the last four weeks, workers have cleaned the canal from Airline Highway to Lake Pontchartrain, allowing for better water flow and more efficient drainage of Montz, with the goal of keeping water out of streets and homes.

The canal cleaning project is part of the larger Public Works Long-Range Plan, which is directing about $25 million in projects over the next few years based on priority. To view the plan and a video segment on the Prescott Canal, visit stcharlesparish-la.gov/publicworks.

Pick up the St. Charles Parish mid-term report
January 2010 marked two years since the St. Charles Parish Council and Parish President took office for their current terms.

Parish leaders are taking stock of their accomplishments in a new 16-page report produced by the Public Information Office. Also included in the report is a chart outlining the many steps projects must go through to reach completion, as well as a complete list of infrastructure projects currently being constructed or designed.

The Mid-Term Report is available at the St. Charles Parish Courthouse in Hahnville or can be mailed by request at stcharlesparish-la.gov/midtermreport. Web visitors can also view the information online at that address.

New Sarpy pump getting quicker upgrade
A recent failure of a pump at the New Sarpy pumping station is moving up the timeline for a new replacement.
Public Works had working been working on a replacement for the possibly 40-year-old pump. Since the timing of the project is in the parish’s favor, the parish will avoid the substantial cost of having the old pump rebuilt on an emergency basis.

The project, currently ongoing, will install a new pump and a cover to protect all the equipment at the pump station.

Channel 6 getting major upgrade
Cox Cable Channel 6 will look completely different in the coming weeks thanks to a major upgrade from Tightrope Media Systems.

A program called Carousel will handle the station’s digital signage, which includes informational slides, weather feeds and RSS news feeds from the parish Web site, along with promos and PSAs scheduled in the regular rotation.

Another program called Cablecast will handle the scheduling of shows, including replays of parish council meetings and informational shows from the LSU AgCenter.

With the new system, all programming will be noted in the channel guide for those with digital cable, or the TV Guide Channel for those without.

In the meantime, Channel 6 is airing slides only. All Channel 6 content and schedules are available 24/7 on our Web site via YouTube and Vimeo. Visit stcharlespairsh-la.gov/channel6 for more details.

And please feel free to contact us with any comments or suggestions about the channel by e-mailing publicinfo@stcharlesgov.net or calling (985) 783-5183.
