Strange that we should be talking about keeping immigrants from Latin America out of the country at a time when they are helping to reconstruct our state after the nation’s biggest disaster in history.
Everywhere you go, you see hispanics banging on nails to secure new roofs to protect our hurricane damaged homes. They’re helping to clean up the debris and gutting homes so we can start over again.
Most of them are fine people, sincerely wanting to help us get going again. And they want to continue working with us in providing the services that the economies in their own countries do not allow at this time.
What if we built a wall now between the United States and Mexico as some have suggested? Like Stalin did in Berlin.
What sort of message would that send?
Our main concern in immigration should be to keep terrorists out, not good, hard-working people who are willing to sweat it out in our rebuilding process.
Hopefully, Congress can come up with an immigration plan that will be fair to all. It should include beefed-up border patrols but not bricks and mortar.
It should allow good people of all nations who are interred with the spirit of democracy and freedom to enter. It should keep out those who do not accept the laws as set up in this country.
And it should let those who qualify sign up for and, in due time, become citizens. We need them for the well-being of our country, especially if we have another Katrina.
