Democrats use bad taste with religious commercials

Desperation seems to have entered the picture in the campaign for governor. The state Democratic party has resorted to playing on religious prejudices to try and win the election.

The commanding lead built by Republican Bobby Jindal has brought out television commercials by the Democrats expounding on some remarks the candidate made years ago when he was changing from the Hindu to Catholic religion. In them, they tried to show that Jindal had a bias against protestants but many protestant leaders have said they showed nothing of the sort.

The commercials are being shown in protestant north Louisiana, not in Catholic south Louisiana, evidence of their intent.

We realize that many people consider religions when they vote. But to enter it into a campaign as a reason for choosing an elected official is as undemocratic as you can get.

The Democrats who came up with that campaign strategy exceeded the bounds of good judgment. We suspect their party will suffer because of it.
