Serving St. Charles Parish more than 20 years, Pontchartrain Orthopedics and Sports Medicine (POSM) opened a new location in Boutte in October 2013.
Metairie-based POSM (formerly Pontchartrain Bone and Joint) wants “to continue serving residents of St. Charles Parish, but offer services on both sides of the river – Destrehan and Boutte,” said Robert Marks, practice administrator and CEO. “POSM wanted to create a new, modern environment and add orthopedic, sports medicine and pain management services to the west bank of the river parishes.”
Independently owned and operated, the group medical practice’s physicians specialize in the surgical and non-surgical treatment of orthopedic, sports medicine and pain management conditions. It is a full-service facility that includes in-house X-ray machines and a fully staffed physical therapy department.
“We treat all types of orthopedic medical problems from small children to senior citizens,” Marks said. “Our non-physician medical staff is licensed and certified.”
The practice offers the added services of onsite X-rays and physical therapy at the Metairie office. Same-day appointments are available for emergencies.
POSM services include sports injuries, but goes far beyond care in all orthopedic services.
The practice’s mission is to professionally and courteously assist patients by the evaluation and treatment of musculoskeletal injuries or disorders so as to achieve the most beneficial outcomes possible.
“Our physicians specialize in the care of the musculoskeletal system, which includes bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles, nerves and related structures of the body,” Marks said. “All Orthopedic problems related to the neck down to the feet of both adults and children are treated.”
POSM is also active in the community, providing school health physicals and acting as team doctors for local high schools.
The practice’s physicians include Drs. John Burvant, Charles Haddad Jr., Jeffrey Sketchler, Michael Zeringue, Joseph Finstein, Keith Melancon, Harold Stokes and Brandon Donnelly.
“Our physicians and staff are happy to consult with current and new patients regarding orthopedic, pain management and sports medicine health issues,” Marks said. “POSM is happy to welcome our new hand specialist, Dr. Brandon Donnelly, to the river region.”
Pontchartrain Bone and Joint Clinic was established in 1971. The name changed to Pontchartrain Orthopedic and Sports Medicine in 2013 when services were expanded to include pain management, sports medicine and physical therapy services.
“This allows us to offer a holistic approach to orthopedic and sports medicine patients,” Marks said.Pain management services include: Spinal cord stimulation, kyphoplasty, rhizotomy, cervical/thoracic/lumbar/sacro-iliac joint injections, lysis of epidural adhesions, sympathetic nerve blocks and non-operative fracture care.
Marks said the quality of care that POSM provides is reflected in its return patients.
“Most of our patients see us for immediate problems,” he said. “We see patients every day that mention that they saw a physician here 10 years or so ago, and that the physicians and staff were so good they came back when they had another problem.”
