When his band played a show at the House of Blues for the first time last year, lead singer and guitarist Jake Brezinsky noticed the wall of photographs of bands who played on the same stage.
The Foo Fighters, Alice in Chains, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers are all inspirations and influences for Brezinsky and his two band mates, bass player Julian Brezinsky and drummer John William Hoz.
“It was really mind blowing,” Jake said. “We had a whole crew setting up our stage for us and taking our cues, and we got to play in front of hundreds of people.”
Their alternative rock, metal band is only three years old, but She Might Be a Beast has released 15 songs, gained about 70,000 listeners on streaming platforms, and played shows throughout the gulf states. They have opened for national acts, including Doyle from the Misfits, Powerman 5000 and Liliac, and they’ve played with younger bands like Silly Goose and Post Profit.
“We try to go as crazy as we can on stage and leave everything out there,” Jake said. “We’ve gained a lot of fans from playing shows like that.”
Jake and his brother Julian are both Hanhville graduates. They started playing music together as kids, in their jam room at home.
“Me and Julian have been playing music together our whole lives,” Jake said. “We kind of finish each other’s sentences when it comes to playing music. We have an intuition of what each other is going to do.”
Jake and Julian both learned music from their stepdad Dean Church, who Jake calls the “Jack Black” of music in St. Charles Parish because of his passion for teaching music to kids. Actor Jack Black played a music teacher in the 2003 film School of Rock.
Jake’s first experience of a live performance was in 2009. He performed in his fifth-grade talent show at Lakewood Elementary.
“That was just the start of me getting a little taste of the live show and how fun it could be to play in front of a live audience,” Jake said.
It wasn’t until after he graduated college, however, that Jake set out to make music his career. In 2021, She Might Be a Beast was formed. The band’s name is somewhat random – it came up in conversation about a video game, but it stuck.
“I am definitely extremely happy with [the name],” Jake said. “There is no larger benefit than having a one-of-a-kind band name.”
Jake said the band’s approach to its music is also unique.
“We bring the raw rock n’ roll spirit of the old days to the modern scene,” he said. “What you see with us is what you get, three guys playing their instruments and singing. No metronome, no tracks.”
Jake said the band is looking forward to playing at Rad Fest in Lafayette in September and playing shows in Texas and New Orleans in October. The band also recently released a song called Tranquilized and started production on another song titled Null and Void.
“We’re just always trying to get to that next level,” Jake said.
