Fish Dat Rodeo set for May 18, ice chests, lures available as door prizes

St. Charles Parish’s fourth annual Fish Dat Rodeo will take place on Saturday, May 18 with door prizes including ice chests, fishing lures and more on the line.

Last year, 125 people took part in the fishing rodeo and parks and recreation officials hope to have a great crowd again this year

“The day is centered around fishing and conservation, one of parks and recreation’s pillars,” Alissa Cavaretta, assistant director for parks and recreation, said. “Our team loves this event because it allows anglers of all ages and abilities to come out, fish, win a door prize and make memories at the Bonnet Carre’ Spillway.”

Anglers of all ages are invited to take part in the tournament, where they will try to catch bass, bream, catfish and sac-a-lait. There is even a miscellaneous category. The event takes place at the spillway’s lower guide levee boat launch and registration for anglers 12 years and under is $5. For those 13 and older or boat captains, the cost is $10.

A Louisiana fishing license is required for anglers 16 and older. All Louisiana fishing regulations apply.

Registration is open through May 17 at The competition begins at safelight with weigh-in at 1 p.m.

The Wetland Watchers will be on hand this year and demonstrate cast netting.

“We are thrilled to have this live demonstration that shows an efficient way for anglers to catch live bait and fish,” Cavaretta added.

Throughout the day, participants will be able to enjoy snoballs and popcorn from the Rotary Club of St. Charles Parish. There will also be a food truck for participants interested in purchasing a meal.

“While we love seeing anglers participate in all of the categories, it is really special for those who may not have an opportunity to fish often to experience throwing a line off the shore in our bank fishing category and learn more about the sport and skill,” Cavaretta said. “All in all, it’s a great day to get out in the community, have some fun by the water and enjoy the recreational space St. Charles Parish has to offer at the Bonnet Carre’ Spillway.”
