Parish invites residents to clean, plant trees at Bonnet Carre Spillway

Parish residents are invited to help clean up the spillway’s recreational areas and plant trees on Sept. 27 from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Bonne Carre Spillway at 101 Lower Guide Levee Road in Norco to celebrate National Public Lands Day.

The clean-up event is hosted each year by St. Charles Parish Department of Parks and Recreation and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Residents volunteer at last year’s National Public Lands Day.

Volunteers should meet at the recreation area at the Bonnet Carré Spillway Lower Guide Levee side to be assigned cleaning locations. The parks and recreation department encourages residents to bring sunscreen and water, and volunteers should wear gloves and closed-toe shoes.

Valero and Coastal Roots sponsored the event this year. Valero will provide refreshments, which will be available under the pavilion during the event. Coastal Roots provided trees for planting. At the conclusion of the workday, all are invited to fish and participate in various outdoor recreation activities.

Last year, over 40 parish residents volunteered at the event.

National Public Lands Day was established in 1994 and is held annually on the fourth Saturday in September.
