Education Expedition allows public chance to tour schools, see day-to-day operations

The second Education Expedition of the year invites attendees to step inside classrooms of Allemands Elementary, J.B. Martin Middle and Hahnville High on December 6 to see the day-to-day life of students. The spring expedition brought attendees to Destrehan High School, Albert Cammon Middle School, and St. Rose Elementary School.

Alexis Cannon, special programs coordinator for St. Charles Parish Public Schools, said the program also includes a tour of the Satellite Center and Lafon Arts Center.

“I think especially for our resident teachers and parents it’s a great opportunity for them to find out what is going on in the classroom,” Cannon said.

The tour is open to the public, but all attendees must RSVP prior to the event.

Cannon said the tour is beneficial for families who are new to the area, or teachers who are interested in applying for positions in the school system. She said it’s a unique opportunity for industry leaders and community members to see the cool things going on in parish schools.

Cannon said the event begins with a school system update from Superintendent Dr. Ken Oertling. Students in the Satellite Center’s Culinary Arts and Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism programs participate as hosts for the event and culinary students serve breakfast and lunch.

Cannon said there are about 80 spots on the tour.  Guests will travel by school bus to the different locations.

“We usually have a representative from transportation who will be able to answer any questions,” Cannon said. “Whenever [guest] arrive at the school, they usually have different activities that the students are doing, some kind of welcome or maybe the band performs.”

She said tour attendees will then visit a few classrooms.

This is the 20th year of the event, which was formerly known as the Patron Tour. It was originally inspired by Dr. Rodney Lafon, former superintendent who sought to showcase what happens in the parish’s schools.
