Tigers win first track meet in 3 years

Destrehan boys finish third

Chalmette – On a frigid Thursday night, the HHS boys track team was able to do something that has eluded them for quite some time – win a meet.

It has been almost three years since the boys have been able to pull it off, but the Tigers claimed the title with a 12.5 point win over Archbishop Rummel in the first outdoor meet of the season. The Tigers scored 130.5 points, followed by Rummel (118) and Destrehan (71).

The Tigers were led in the field events by Adrien Young, who scored 10 points by placing first in the shot put. Rickey Preston earned eight points by placing second in the javelin throw and Hunter Perrin also picked up two points for the Tigers after finishing fifth in the boys’ discus throw.

On the track side, Tiger long distance runner Bryce Robinson earned 18 points by placing first in the 3200 meter and second in the 800 meter. His twin brother, Beau Robinson, earned 12 points by placing second in the 3200 meter and fourth in the 800 meter.

Sprinter Andre Carter took home 10 points, placing first in the 100 meter dash, while Julian Turner finished with eight points after placing second in the 400 meter dash. In the hurdles, Brandon Singleton and Larry Boyd each came out second in the 110 meter and 300 meter hurdles, respectively.

For the Destrehan boys, Brandon Scott picked up 20 points for the Wildcats after winning the long jump and the triple jump. Teammate Kendell Anderson came out fifth in the long jump and sixth in the triple jump.

Destrehan’s Denzel Arceneaux and Rickey Jefferson brought home a combined 14 points after tying for second place in the 100 meter dash. Davon Jenkins finished third in the 200 meter dash, while Oliver Burks came in sixth in the 400 meter dash.

The Wildcats also finished second in the 4×200 meter relay. Team members in that race included Jenkins, Rondai Robinson, Alfred Smith and Jefferson.

Wildcat football star Rae Juan Marbley did well in the throwing competitions, finishing second in the boys’ discus throw, fifth in shot put and fifth in javelin throw.

On the girls’ side, the Lady Tigers finished in third place with 102 points, 13 points behind winner Archbishop Chapelle (115).

Sophomore Breanna Bias started the outdoor season with a bang, earning Field MVP honors. She picked up 20 points in the field by placing first in both the long jump and the triple jump, along with earning two individual points in the 400 meter dash. Breanna was also the anchor leg on the 4×100 and 4×200 relay teams, which both came in first place.

Other members of the 4×100 relay team were Zaria Scott, Asia Lucas and Christa Shelton. Shelton, Lucas and Toryan Flot joined Bias in the 4×200 relay. Shelton also gained eight points in the 100 meter dash (second place) and Flot earned 10 points by placing third in the 100 meter hurdles and fourth in the 300 meter hurdles.

The Tigers hope to continue the trend in the Rummel Classic, which is being held on Thursday, March 7 at Tad Gormley stadium in City Park.
