Hahnville High School dominated the Don Raymond Relays on Friday, with both the boys and girls finishing first in the event.
This was the first time that the meet has been held since 2010 and it featured Hahnville, Destrehan, Higgins, Thomas Jefferson, John McDonogh and Grace King.
The Hahnville boys finished with 230 points, which was 140 points ahead of second place Thomas Jefferson. Higgins came in third with 72 points, while Destrehan finished fourth with 65 points. John McDonogh finished in last place.
The Hahnville girls came in first after putting up 202 points. Thomas Jefferson was second with 107 points, while Destrehan finished third with 92 points followed by Higgins (84) and John McDonogh (10).
The biggest track event in the parish is named for former Hahnville student-athlete Don Raymond. Not only was Raymond the first black athlete to play a sport at Hahnville, he was also the first black four-sport letterman in the state’s history and was the first black player named to Louisiana’s All-State football team.
But Raymond suffered a tragic fate, dying in a car wreck in 1969 at the age of 16.
