Lady Tigers roll through tourney field, but fall in final

The Hahnville Lady Tigers soccer team tore through the tourney field at the 14th annual Battle on the Bayou, but lost a heartbreaker to Mississippi school Bay High in the championship game, 1-0.

The Lady Tigers got off to a slow start in the first tournament game against Central Lafourche, but still managed to take a 1-0 lead into halftime thanks to a goal by Brandie Fabre. In the second half, Hahnville pulled away with three more goals for a 4-1 victory. Fabre scored again in the second, while Amye Barre and Kim Porche also found the back of the net. Barre finished with two assists, while Jessica St. Pierre had one.

Hahnville’s offensive fireworks continued in the second game, with the Lady Tigers recording a 3-0 shutout win against Lusher. Porche, Barre and Brandi Soigner all scored in the game, while St. Pierre and Taylor Laurent had assists.

After cruising in the first two games, Hahnville was tested in the quarterfinals against St. Thomas Aquinas in a hard-fought 2-1 victory.

A pass from Grayson Touchard set up Barre’s opening goal and then Touchard came through with a goal of her own to clinch the victory.

In the semifinals, Hahnville’s defense played their best game of the tournament to push the Lady Tigers into the championship game with a 1-0 win over Catholic New Iberia. St. Pierre’s goal proved to be the difference for Hahnville.

After four-straight wins, the Lady Tigers finally suffered a 1-0 loss to Bay High, which gave Hahnville a second-place finish.

Overall, sixteen teams competed in the tournament, which was hosted by Hahnville. Teams included Central Lafourche, Destrehan, St. Thomas Aquinas, Lusher, Comeaux, Catholic, Riverside, University High, Live Oak, Lutcher, East St. John, Bay High, Morgan City and junior varsity squads from both Comeaux and Hahnville.
