Former LSU lineman Joseph Baird dead at 80

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) – Former LSU lineman Joseph “Red” Baird has died, a university spokesman said Wednesday.

Baird, a Shreveport native who played for LSU from 1946 to 1949, would have turned 81 on Oct. 22. Baird arrived at LSU after starring at Byrd High School and serving in the U.S. Navy.

He played in the 1947 Cotton Bowl against Arkansas and the 1950 Sugar Bowl against Oklahoma. Baird received a masters degree in education from LSU and taught history and math at Central, Baker, Kenilworth and Glasgow schools.

Baird is survived by his wife, Patsy Sandifer Baird, and two sons, Greg and Gary.
