Destrehan offense puts on clinic in 54-22 win

Destrehan quarterback Donovan Isom and the rest of the Wildcat offense put on a clinic on Friday, scoring on all seven of their possessions in the first half on their way to a 54-22 blowout win over West Jefferson. Isom was spectacular, throwing five touchdowns and scrambling for another to lead Destrehan.

It only took the Wildcats 26 seconds to score in the opening quarter. Will Mathews kicked off the game with a 32-yard run on the first play from scrimmage, and Isom found Kurk Merritt for a 20-yard score on the next play.

After keeping West Jeff off the board, the Wildcat offense struck again. This time Mathews wound his way through the Buccaneer offense on his way to a 51-yard touchdown run.

The Wildcats added one more touchdown in the first quarter after Isom hit junior receiver Alfred Smith for a huge gain. Isom then connected with sophomore Tremaine Armstrong for a 9-yard score to put Destrehan up 21-0.

West Jeff finally got on the board in the second, but Destrehan answered right back. Isom threw for his third touchdown after finding sophomore John Williams open in the middle of the field. Williams did the rest on the 21-yard score, putting Destrehan up 28-8 with 9:06 left in the first half.

After throwing for three scores, Isom used his feet to put points on the board as he reversed field for a 16-yard scamper that gave Destrehan a 34-8 lead with 6:36 remaining.

Less than three minutes later, Isom threw a 29-yard touchdown to put the Wildcats up 41-8.

On their seventh drive of the opening half, Destrehan ran out of time. Though they got to the Buccaneer 3-yard line, Cameron Walsh kicked a 20-yard field goal to make the score 44-16 as time expired in the first half.

Isom’s night came to an early end in the third quarter after he opened up the second half with a 68-yard touchdown to Merritt to give Destrehan a 51-16 lead. The Wildcats pulled their offensive starters after that touchdown.

The final points for the Wildcats came in the fourth quarter when Kyler LeGrange laced a 32-yard field goal.
