Jonathan Menard has been named publisher of the St. Charles Herald-Guide. In his new position, Menard will oversee all aspects of the newspaper in addition to his duties as managing editor.
Menard, 32, attended LSU and the University of Alabama, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in journalism. While in college, he worked for two national magazines and took over as sports editor for the Andalusia Star-News in south Alabama two weeks after his college graduation.
Menard was named editor of the Herald-Guide in 2007. Under his leadership, the paper has won 78 awards from the Louisiana Press Association, including Best News Coverage, Best Sports Coverage, Best Front Page and General Excellence. The Herald Guide was recently named Newspaper of the Year for its work in 2012.
“It is an honor and a privilege to be the publisher of a paper like the Herald-Guide, which has been around since the 1870s,” Menard said. “While we have seen other papers in the surrounding area continually switch their editorial strategies, the Herald-Guide’s focus has remained the same since its inception – to provide community news to our residents that can’t be found anywhere else.”
The paper has recently expanded its online coverage through its redesigned website, www.heraldguide.com. More than 40,000 people visit the site each month to get their parish news.
“Jonathan has been instrumental in expanding our local coverage and presence through our website and Facebook during this time of unprecedented change in the way people are getting their news,” Ann Taylor, executive editor of the Herald-Guide, said. “We are very excited to name him publisher of the St. Charles Herald-Guide and look forward to our continued growth as a community news leader with Jonathan at the helm.”
Menard will work with Herald-Guide Advertising Director Joe Lopez to formulate new strategies that will help businesses in the area get their message across to the paper’s many newsprint and online readers.
“We have an abundance of great businesses and commercial industry members in St. Charles Parish and we want to work with them so that they can reach the more than 46,000 people that read our articles each month,” Menard said. “We are the only local paper in this great community of St. Charles Parish and we have won numerous awards due to our ability to cover topics that interest everyone.”
Menard lives in Luling with his wife, Lynda. They are expecting twins this winter.
