After cruising through the Catfish Classic, the Destrehan softball team struggled against some of the top teams in the state at the Sulphur Spring Classic.
The Lady Wildcats finished the tournament with a 1-2 record, beating Parkway but falling to Ouchita and Evangel. Still, Destrehan didnít go away quietly in their losses.
The Lady Wildcats fell to Ouchita 2-1 despite a valiant pitching performance from Abbie Hall. Nicole Haydel was the lone bright spot on offense for Destrehan, finishing 1-for-3 with a run scored.
Against Evangel, Destrehan lost by a 5-3 score. While Hall again suffered the loss, she was impressive from the plate, going 2-for-3 in the game with a triple. Haydel also recorded a double in the game.
While the Lady Wildcats suffered back-to-back losses for the first time this season, they got back on track in the tourney finale against Parkway. Led by Haydel, who hit a home run, Destrehan picked up a 4-2 win. Bethany Sarabia went 2-for-3 in the game with an RBI, while Amanda McNaughton was 1-for-3 with an RBI.
Ashley Bolin picked up the win and improved her season record to 5-2.
Despite his teamís two losses, Destrehan head coach Kenny Montz felt his squad competed well in every game, which he said was encouraging considering the tough competition.
"We were right there in every game and had our chances to win all three," he said. "Even though we lost two of three, I truly believe that we are going to come out of this weekend a much better team, and a much more mentally tough team."
