Physician Spotlight – Dr. Brett Hymel

With a growing practice and return to his native St. Charles Parish, Dr. Brett Hymel specializes in gastroenterology (GI) and will begin seeing patients in the area on July 23.

“I chose gastroenterology because disorders of the GI system are very common issues across our population,” said Hymel, whose new office is at 107 Maryland Dr. in Luling.

“And it affords me the opportunity to effectively perform screening procedures, which have been proven to decrease one’s risk of cancer in the future.

Also, it allows for the maintenance of long-term relationships with patients.”

In addition to general GI procedures, such as upper endoscopy and colonoscopy, Hymel has training in advanced endoscopic procedures. This mostly involves endoscopic ultrasound and ERCP that are used to evaluate and treat disorders of the GI tract, as well and the pancreas, gallbladder and bile ducts.

Hymel graduated from LSU School of Medicine, completed his internal medicine residency at Tulane School of Medicine and his gastroenterology fellowship at LSU.

He is board certified in both internal medicine and gastroenterology. He also offers ambulatory office visits to evaluate and manage common GI tract issues such as abdominal pain, anemia, constipation and diarrhea, as well as disorders of the pancreas, liver and bile duct. He also provides colon cancer screening procedures.

“My practice is growing, mainly because GI related disorders are very common among the population at large,” Hymel said. “Further, there are cancer screening procedures within the field of gastroenterology which are available even without symptoms being present. These procedures can reduce one’s long-term cancer risk.”

He also has advanced training in diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy.

Hymel was raised in St. Charles Parish and attended Hahnville High School. His mother, Anita Hymel, was a teacher in the parish’s school system and also worked for Entergy.  His father retired from Union Carbide/Dow Chemical.

Hymel and his wife, Mary Beth Morel Hymel, and their three daughters live in Metairie.

He is an associate with Metropolitan Gastroenterology Associates.

The group includes: Hymel and Drs. Steve Venturatos, Benjamin Guider Jr., Rian Tanenbaum, Richard Puente, William Meyers Jr., Howard Brenner, Charles Schibler, George Catinis, Shantiprakash Kedia, Sanjeeva Reddy, Abdul Khan, James Lilly, Herbert Mayer, Mark Wegmann, Rebekah Lemann, Mark Marino, Gary Reiss, Scott Pollack, Sarath Krishnan and Richard Awtrey.
