Norco man’s life claimed by Friday morning house fire

An 86-year-old Norco man was killed Friday morning as result of an early morning house fire in his Pine Street home.

The Louisiana State Fire Marshal is investigating the circumstances of the fire, which occurred in the 400 block of Pine Street. At approximately 6:45 a.m., the Norco Fire Department responded to the fire, which was reported by a neighbor who is also a volunteer firefighter. That neighbor found smoke coming from the home and located the homeowner unconscious, sitting up against his screen door, and pulled him away from the home before calling 911.

The homeowner was pronounced dead on the scene. His identity was not disclosed.

According to the State Fire Marshal’s office, the fire began in the man’s kitchen. Home surveillance video revealed the fire began at 4:30 a.m. near the kitchen table. The exact cause and ignition source is still unknown and under investigation. The Fire Marshal’s Office said deputies theorize an unattended candle or storage of flammable materials near the area could have contributed.

Investigators have classified the fire as accidental.

The man’s official cause of death is pending autopsy.
