First fest proceeds to benefit Komen Foundation, Care Center
This weekend’s inaugural St. Charles Rockin’ River Music Fest offers event goers a strong lineup of musical talent and a wealth of food and fun.
The fest kicks off Friday and runs through Saturday night at the Edward A. Dufresne Community Center in Luling. The event will be held 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and then from noon to 11 p.m. Saturday.
Proceeds will benefit the St. Charles Care Center and the Susan G. Komen Foundation for the Cure.
“We’re looking forward to what looks like it will be a beautiful weekend,” said Mike Bernard, festival coordinator. “The parish has been great and they’re doing everything they can do to make sure the grounds are ready. It’ll be a classic festival environment and we’re very much looking forward to it.”
Friday night sees Molly Hatchet headline, the act taking the stage from 9:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. Christopher Shayne kicks off the event from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m., with Blackfoot following from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. and Shooter Jennings after that from 8 to 9 p.m. Doors will open to the public at 5 p.m. Dee Snider of Twisted Sister fame headlines Saturday night from 9 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Autograph leads off the day on stage from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Great White comes next from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Local bands will also play throughout the day. Doors will be open to the public at noon.
Autograph signed on to play as a substitute for Brian Howe of Bad Company fame. Howe recently suffered a significant heart attack and had to withdraw.
“We feel like that it was a major break for us to be able to get them at such a late stage, and we’re excited to see them on stage,” Bernard said.
The event was brainstormed as a way to give back and generate money for the community, said Bernard. He added the hope is for the Rockin ‘Music Fest to become a yearly event.
There will be plenty to eat. Pastalaya, jambalaya, fried fish, fried shrimp, tacos, hot dogs and hamburgers are among the items attendees will enjoy.
Bernard said the feedback he’s gotten from people around the community has been very positive, and that while the newness of the event doesn’t give him a strong grasp of what attendance can be expected, he said he’d be surprised if it were lower than 3 to 5K.
“It’s the first time we’ve had anything like this in St. Charles,” Bernard said. “I’m pretty pumped up about it and I think the community is really pumped up about it. It hasn’t been easy to get off the ground, but if it were, everyone would do it. We’ve had tremendous support from our sponsors and a lot of really good people.”Bernard added that volunteers to help with the festival are still being sought.
