Man pleads guilty to Nichols murder

Over three years after the brutal murder of Lindsay Nichols, the New Orleans man accused of it has pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 40 years in prison without benefit of probation, parole or suspension of sentence.

“This is final,” said Nichols’ mother, Jolene Dufrene of Des Allemands. “And for sure he won’t be out until his 70s.”

Nichols was found shot to death and burned in the trunk of her vehicle in New Orleans East on June 21, 2015.

Thayon Samson was arrested and charged in the murder. On Friday (Sept. 7), Samson pleaded guilty to manslaughter, second-degree kidnapping, obstruction of justice and solicitation for murder in connection with Nichols’ death.

Troy Varnado Jr., also of New Orleans and Samson’s co-defendant, will stand trial on Sept. 17 on second-degree murder, second-degree kidnapping, obstruction of justice, and accessory after the fact to second-degree murder.
