Wildcats, Tigers combine to put 22 on All-District rosters
With the release of the District II-5 soccer rosters, Destrehan’s Noelle Kelley and Trent Tregle each earned an honor indicative of the respect they’ve earned from opposing coaches.
Kelley earned District II-5 girls Offensive MVP honors, leading the way for a strong crop of representatives from a Destrehan team that put together the best season in Ladycats history. Meanwhile, Tregle notched Offensive MVP on the District II-5 boys squad after leading the Wildcats back to the postseason and to a postseason victory.
Kelley headlines the district’s girls first team, joined by Camille Alack and Morgan Rigby as Wildcat first-teamers.
Destrehan earned four second teamers, including Elizabeth Kelley, Jordan Lemoine, Stephanie Ruiz and Tayler Tabb.
The Ladycats reached the state semifinal round for the first time in school history in 2018, after earning the No. 5 seed in Division II. Highlighting their path there was a quarterfinal win at Lakeshore, a dramatic overtime win over Division II’s two-time defending champion. It was Lakeshore’s first-ever home playoff loss, and it came down to a penalty kick shootout. DHS finished 15-7-1.
Kelley, a team captain, was a big part of that success as she patrolled the middle of the field.
“She had a pretty dominant year,” said Destrehan coach Kyle Tizzard. “That’s what we’ve come to expect from her and the way she plays. She’s somebody that controls the game all around. She pretty much does everything a team could ask for, especially being the captain.”
Kelley scored 17 goals and made 26 assists this season.
Tizzard said her defining trait as a player is the way she can impose her will on a match.
“She’s makes an impact on both offense and defense,” Tizzard said. “When our defense gets the ball, they move the ball to her and she quickly presses it up the field. Coaches recognize her after seeing her once and they adjust the next time out … she makes coaches recognize her.”
For the Destrehan boys, Tregle led the way among the Wildcats’ All-District selections after nailing down Offensive MVP.
He is joined on the first team by DHS’ Philip Stratton.
Wildcats who earned the nod to the second team include Justin Rigby, Michael Ehrmann, Nicholas Morrow, David Garcia and Kyle Grieshop.
Tregle scored 27 goals this season, helping to lift the Wildcats from a difficult start to a season thought to be a rebuilding campaign. Instead, the forward and his teammates pushed forward to not only reach the playoffs, but earn a first-round victory on the road against Lakeshore. Destrehan finished the season 9-5-4 after going winless in its first four matches of the season.
Tregle, a forward and team captain, set the tone for his team on and off the field.
“He was one of the high scorers in high school soccer, and he scored his goals on good teams and in key spots,” Destrehan coach Jhovanny Santamaria said. “As his career has gone on, he’s become really confident in what he could do on the field. His teammates respect him. And he’s a very smart player.”
Perhaps the most impressive aspect of Tregle’s MVP is the fact he started playing soccer only a few years ago. He evolved into a district MVP and someone who has earned offers to play at the collegiate level.
“He started about five years ago. When I was coaching U-12 boys, he would come and practice a bit with the team. He was interested in learning,” Santamaria said. “He joined our team (at Destrehan) as a sophomore, and by the time he was a junior he became a much stronger, smarter player.”
HHS EARNS EIGHT ALL-DISTRICT SELECTIONS
Hahnville’s Matthew Boyer was named to the All-District I-5 boys first team.
Thomas Lanata, Paxton Manieri and Ty Fabre earned All-District second team honors.
For the Tiger girls, Marissa Gilbert represented Hahnville on the All-District I-5 first team.
Hahnville players earning spots on the second team were Theresa Jones, Kara Steverson and Amber Hood.
